How to configure computer shutdown? Several options for shutting down a computer running Windows8 How to configure shutdown of a Windows 8 computer.

With Microsoft's decision to ditch the traditional Start button and switch to a tiled interface, some have encountered an unexpected problem. It turns out that not everyone can figure out how to turn off a laptop or computer with Windows 8 installed, and therefore such questions regularly appear. Well, we won’t consider all the existing methods, but will simply collect a couple of tips on setting up a quick shutdown.

A standard shutdown in Windows 8 looks like this: swipe on the right side of the screen, click on the gear icon, click “Shutdown” and select the desired action. But you can do it differently.

1. Bring back the Start button

In one of the previous articles we already looked at the Windows 8/8.1 interface. And having done this, it won’t be too difficult to use the usual dialogue: Start - Shutdown.

2. Use the power button

The method that the author of this article uses is setting up shutdown by pressing the power button on the laptop. Try clicking and see what happens. Depending on the settings, the laptop may go into sleep or hibernation mode, but we need a complete shutdown, so we will have to use the settings.

Open Control Panel - Power Options(you can open the control panel by calling the menu using the combination Win+i) or right-click on the battery icon in the system tray and select Power supply.

3. Quick transition to standard shutdown

To speed up the standard method, instead of unnecessary finger movements in the Windows 8 interface, you will need to remember the key combination Win+i. Then all you have to do is click Switch off and select an action (shutdown, sleep mode, reboot).

4. Create a shortcut for the shutdown command

On your desktop, right-click and select Create - Shortcut. In the shortcut creation wizard that opens, in the “Specify the location of the object” line, simply enter shutdown /s /t 0(0 is the number of seconds before shutdown, you can specify your own). Click Further and enter the name of the shortcut to your taste and color, then click Ready.

The created shortcut can be left on the desktop, or moved to the taskbar or somewhere else. Clicking on it will turn off the computer after the specified number of seconds.

You can right-click to open Properties shortcut and in the "Short call" line indicate your hot key combination to turn off, for example Ctrl + Alt + 1 or Ctrl + Shift + Q. Here in the properties you can click on the button Change icon and choose a more suitable label image.

By analogy with the instructions above, you can create shortcuts for other actions:
Dream: rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep
Hibernation: PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState

First, let's figure out how to completely turn off a laptop or regular PC on Windows 8. Still, Microsoft decided to remove the Start menu in this operating system and replace it with a tiled interface.

So, to turn off and restart the laptop, you need to point the mouse pointer to the lower right corner all the way, a menu similar to this will appear.

There are many different items in this column for setting up your computer, but we need to clickSettings (gear icon). Thus, a menu will pop up where we can turn off the laptop, put it into sleep mode or reboot.

I think some people will not be very comfortable turning off the device this way. Therefore, now we will look at ways to do this faster.

Start menu

To have quick access to computer programs, as well as quickly turn off the device. Let's bring back the Start menu. We talked about this in the article How to return.

Using the power button on a laptop

We can just click on power button. But the point is that the computer will go into sleep mode. To put a button to turn off the laptop you need to open Control Panel (Win+I), then Power supply. You can also go to Power Options by right-clicking on the battery.

In the window that opens, we see the inscription "Action when pressing the power button" next to it it says from battery and from mains, in these points we select Shutdown.

The same can be done when closing the lid.

Quick shutdown method

As we said above, some may not like the standard method of turning off, but in order not to make unnecessary “body movements”, just press the combination Win+I. A menu will appear on the right where you can quickly turn off the device.

Shut down using a shortcut

Also a pretty simple method. To do this, right-click on the desktop, in the menu that appears, click Create – Shortcut. In field “Specify the location of the object” just enter the command: shutdown /s /t 0. Click Further, name our shortcut as we want and click OK. (By the way, 0 – this is how many seconds your computer will turn off, you can set your value).

You can leave the shortcut in a place accessible to you so that you can quickly turn it off.

You can make icons for rebooting the screen, as well as going into sleep mode.

To do this, we create a Shortcut in the same way and enter the following values:

  1. To reboot - shutdown -r -t 0
  2. To go to sleep - rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep
  3. Hibernation - PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState

So we figured out how to quickly turn off a computer on Windows 8 and 8.1. By the way, if you are interested, for example, at school or office, then read the article using the link provided.

Until next time.

Today the topic of the article will be very simple, but it confuses many novice users - how to turn off the computer in Windows 8. It would seem that there could be something complicated here, and it makes no sense to devote an entire article to this issue. However, this is an erroneous statement.

The eighth version of the Microsoft system has undergone significant changes compared to the previous Windows 7. The most noticeable and important, perhaps, was the removal of the Start menu. Therefore, many users have a question: how can they now turn off a personal computer if Windows 8 is installed on it, because previously this was done through the well-known “Start”. The developers of the new system hid the shutdown means; now they are not as easy to get to as in previous versions. This is proven by the fact that Microsoft targeted Windows 8 more for tablets, so that there was no need to turn it off, and the computer was simply in sleep mode, as is the case with tablets and smartphones.

In this article I will talk about 5 different options, after which you will choose the one that is more convenient for you. By the way, I would like to note that in the updated version of Windows 8, they still added “Start”, but the functions that I would like to see are not there. Although many were expecting something else 😉 .

First way- the most banal. It involves using the Charms panel. Move the mouse cursor to the right side of the screen to the very bottom, and a menu with functions will smoothly appear in front of you. Here you should select “Options”, and then click “Shutdown”.

After all this, in the next pop-up window, click on “Shut down” and the computer will turn off. To speed up the process, you can use special keyboard shortcuts, such as “Win” + “C” to open Charms or “Win” + “I” to open “Change PC Settings.” Now let's move on to other ways to turn off your computer in Windows 8.

Second option not as difficult as the first one, but it is faster, as I will now show you how to turn off your computer in Windows 8 using the keyboard. Exit Metro to the desktop, hold down the “Alt” + “F4” keys. Select "Shutdown" and select "OK".

That's it, the computer will start to turn off.

Third way how to turn off Windows 8. To do this we will have to get to the lock screen. It is installed automatically after a certain period of time while you are not using Windows, or you can call it manually using the key combination “Win” + “L”.

When we hit it, we drag the top of the screen with the mouse, thereby turning it off. You will see a list of all the accounts installed in this Windows 8, with the option to log in to one of them. But we are interested in the lower right corner of the screen, where there is a shutdown button. Click it and in the drop-down window, confirm your action by clicking on the item: “Shut down”. Ready!

Fourth option shutdown is a bit like the previous one. Press the “Ctrl” + “Alt” + “Delete” keys on the keyboard; at the bottom right there is the same shutdown button that was described in the third method.

Click on it, then on “Shut down”.

Fifth method for a change. It is enough to spend a couple of minutes of your time once, so that later you can turn off the computer with just one click of the mouse. What should be done? We go to the desktop, right-click anywhere. Click on the line: “Create”, then – “Shortcut”.

A new window will open with a field in the center called: “Specify the location of the object.” Copy the following line there or enter it manually: “shutdown -s -t 00”, without quotes.

At the end of all these procedures, a shortcut with your name will appear on the desktop, by clicking on which you will turn off the computer, but its icon will be completely ugly.

To give it the proper appearance, right-click on the shortcut, look for it and click on the item: “Properties”.

See you again!

Have you been waiting for puzzles? Here they are:

Do not write answers in contacts or in comments, as I do not count these answers!

No matter how simple the question of how to completely turn off a laptop running Windows 8 may seem, not all users can answer it. It would seem, what could be the catch here? However, you just have to take a closer look at the interface of the newfangled 8, and the answer will ask itself: the new version of the operating system from Microsoft is simply deprived of the painfully familiar “Start” menu, through which, in fact, it was executed on earlier releases of Windows turning off the computer. Is this a problem? Not at all, as there are plenty of ways to disable your Windows 8 PC!

Method number 1: Use “hot keys”

To save time and effort when turning off a laptop or desktop computer when using Windows 8, pressing special “hot keys” on the keyboard will help. So, as a result of the combination Ctrl+Alt+Del, a window of system security parameters will appear on the monitor screen, in the lower right corner of which you can find the PC shutdown button:

At the same time, the Alt+F4 key combination is also suitable for quickly logging out of the system. However, if several applications are running on the PC, it is used only after first pressing +D.

One way or another, pressing such a key combination will lead to a window for selecting Windows actions, in which you can easily find the “Shutdown” command of the system.

Method number 2: Use the “Run” utility

You can also completely shut down your Windows 8 computer using the Run system utility. To do this, after pressing +R and launching such a program, we need to enter the phrase shutdown /s /t 0 /f in its “Open” field and click Enter:

As a result of such a simple manipulation, all tasks running on the system will be completed, applications and programs in use will be closed, and, finally, the computer will shut down completely. At the same time, in order not to enter a similar command each time into the “Run” utility or into the command line, which is also suitable for executing it on the laptop desktop, you can create a special shortcut, indicating in its contents the value shutdown /s /t 0 /f :

One way or another, to quickly exit Windows 8 in this case, it will be enough to simply launch such a shortcut by clicking on it with the mouse. At the same time, you can select special keys for this purpose. To do this, after creating the corresponding shortcut on the PC, we will need to first right-click on it, then select the “Properties” item in the menu that opens, and then click the “Shortcut” tab in the window that appears:

After this, to complete the setup, all that remains is to find the “Short call” field, enter in it a key combination suitable for turning off the laptop and click OK to save the changes.

Method No. 3: Turn off the PC through the “Options” menu

You can also significantly simplify the process of turning off your computer using the “Options” menu. There are different ways to get into it. In particular, to achieve such a goal, it will be enough to either simultaneously press the windows + I keys on the keyboard, or move the mouse cursor over the upper right corner of the desktop and click the corresponding tab in the panel that opens - “Options”.

In any case, in order to turn off the PC and log out of the system after performing these steps, you will need to click the “Shutdown” icon in the window that opens, and then select the “Shut down” option in the menu that appears:

At the same time, to exit Windows 8 on a laptop, you can also use the power button, reconfigured accordingly in the power settings.

Automatic shutdown of the computer is an extremely useful option that will help you out more than once. It comes in handy in cases where your PC or laptop is busy with a long process and you need to leave. In this case, you can configure the computer to turn off - when the desired operation is completed, it will turn off on its own. And you can calmly go to bed, go to work or do your other things.

Most often, configuration is required if you:

  • check your PC for viruses;
  • convert video files;
  • install a computer game;
  • download large files;
  • copy important data, etc.

There are many options here, but the point should be clear.

The first is using built-in Windows tools. The second is using additional software. Read about the last method here:. And this article describes all the possible ways to configure the computer to turn off at a given time using built-in Windows tools.

All the methods below are universal and work on Windows 7, 8 and 10. Therefore, no matter what operating system you have, you can schedule your computer to shut down in any convenient way.

The first method on how you can enable automatic shutdown of a computer or laptop is to use the “Run” section. For this:

The following window will appear confirming that everything was done correctly.

The number 3600 is the number of seconds. It can be anything. This particular command activates the automatic shutdown of the PC after 1 hour. The procedure is one-time only. If you need to turn it off again, you must do it again.

Instead of the number 3600, you can write any other number:

  • 600 – shutdown after 10 minutes;
  • 1800 – after 30 minutes;
  • 5400 – in an hour and a half.

I think the principle is clear and you can calculate the required value yourself.

If you have already activated the computer to shut down and for some reason changed your mind, then call this window again and write the line shutdown -a . As a result, the scheduled automatic shutdown will be cancelled. If everything is done correctly, the following message will appear.

Shutting down the computer via the command line

Another very similar method is through the command line. To enable this option:

If you suddenly change your mind about performing this operation, then open this window again and enter – shutdown -a.

This command only works when you have already set the time to turn off the computer, but it has not yet arrived.

By the way, if this procedure needs to be performed regularly, then there is an easier way. To avoid opening the Run window or Command Prompt, create a shortcut (for example, on your desktop). And in the “Object Location” field write the following line C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 5400(the number can be any). Click Next, then enter a name for the shortcut and click Finish.

Now, when you need to set your computer to shut down, just click on this shortcut. And this option is immediately activated (you will see a confirmation message).

For convenience, you can create another shortcut to remove turning off the computer (in case you need it). But here you need to write down the following: C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -a(no period at the end).

Turn off the computer according to schedule

And the last method is to turn off the computer by time using the “Scheduler”. Suitable if you need to perform this procedure regularly: daily, weekly, etc. In order not to constantly launch the command line, you just need to set the time to turn off your computer or laptop once and that’s it.

To do this:

This is how you can set the computer shutdown time. Daily or monthly settings are carried out in approximately the same way. Some fields will be different, but there is nothing complicated there - you'll figure it out.

What should I do if I need to edit or delete this task? In this case, go back to the “Scheduler” and open the “Library” tab. Find your task in the list here (by name) and double-click with the left button.

In the window that opens, go to the “Triggers” section and click on the “Edit” button.

If you no longer need to shut down your PC on a schedule, then go to the “Library”, select your task, right-click, and then click “Delete”.

A few words in conclusion

Many modern programs have a checkbox “Turn off the PC after finishing the procedure.” Most often, it is available in those utilities that take a long time to complete their work - for example, disk defragmentation, scanning a laptop or computer for viruses, etc.

Be sure to check that each program has this checkbox. If it is, then you will not need to configure the PC to turn off at a time. It's much easier and more convenient. If it is not there, then you will have to configure it manually.

By the way, how to correctly calculate the time when you need to turn off your PC? Usually programs show an approximate value when a specific procedure (virus scan or defragmentation) will be completed. Look at it and add another 20-30% (or more) on top. In any case, your PC will be turned off before you wake up in the morning or come home from work in the evening.
